Ah, yes, the much-maligned Solenopsis, or "fire ants" as theyre popularly known!
Some people call any red and black ant "fire ants", but they are a specific genera, thank you.
I have pictured below (although it is a very blurry pic, sorry!) of a Solenopsis next to a Pogonomyrmex, so you can plainly see the differences! (the smaller one is the Solenopsis, they are very small ants)
I wasn't able to get very many photos of these, as they were killed on sight by my father :[.
I can't tell whether these are our native Solenopsis xyloni or the imported fire ant Solenopsis invicta (the troublemaker).
People hate them for the things they do and the mischief and mayhem they cause but to survive in their native habitats they have to BE! AGGRESSIVE! BE BE AGGRESSIVE!!
I enjoy their TWO, count 'em, TWO bulbous petiolar nodes. I think they're cute!
